Baby comforting is an important Art that every Parent must learn
ParentingBaby Comforting or Baby care is a basic need, like food and safety. Baby monkeys raised without maternal contact don't survive. Human babies raised in impersonal institutions without loving relationships, grow up stunted, both physically and emotionally. And just as babies need comforting, parents have a need to give comfort. What is more fulfilling than to hold a crying baby and have her relax, quiet down and snuggle in? and what is more demoralizing than picking up a crying baby and having her scream and arch away?
Baby comforting is very much a here and now activity. The main goal is to help your child get through a particular rough moment, and move on. But there are long term effects too. Each time you comfort your baby, you learn more about her.
You come to know what upsets her, and what she needs to feel better. At the same time, your child comes to know and trust you, and in turn, learns how to be comforting person herself. You can see this in the three year old who lovingly cradles her doll saying “don’t cry baby”! A young child who is well and wisely comforted also has a stock of inner reassurance to draw upon when faced with life’s inevitable challenges later on.
Comforting a crying baby is a natural reaction, but it isn’t always easy. Some babies get upset more often than others, and have a harder time calming down. Babies who have colic can cry for hours in spite of everything their parents try. As babies turn into toddlers, their needs for comforting change. They are better able to handle common physical stress, for example hunger, but face new emotional challenges such as being apart from their parents or dealing with imaginary monsters. These new upsets require different kinds of comforting.
Whether you are just learning to interpret your baby’s different cries or dealing with a fretful toddler, you should ensure that your steps to comfort that baby should be proper which would not only sooth the baby, but also give you confidence towards your baby.
