Too many are too much

Babies grow at a remarkable pace during the first few weeks of their life. Some babies fit into the newborn clothes for a very short period of time and few others don’t fit into them at all. If at all you receive a lot of newborn clothes as gifts, then you can go and exchange them with the larger sizes if possible. It is a best practice not to remove the tags unless and until you are confident that your newborn will be able to wear those clothes or not.

Easy to put on and off

As the baby is so tender he or she bends in which ever shape. Try to look out for clothes in which you don’t have to bend the baby much for diaper changes and baths. Look out for the clothes which has full snap opening at the bottom or a long zipper on the front. If the clothes are to be pulled over the baby’s head then make sure that the outfit has a wider opening which is soft and stretchy so that you don’t tug it on the baby’s head.

Easy to handle

Unless the clothes are for some special occasions, always check if they are machine washable. It will come as a surprise to most of us that most of the newborn clothes are not machine washable. Always check the label before buying any newborn clothes as most of them are hand wash only or dry clean only clothes in the market.

Baby’s comfort, the most important factor

Look for the snaps, zippers or the buttons does not cause any harm to the baby’s skin. These all become a reason of discomfort for the baby if they are at the wrong spot or tight against the skin. Make sure that there is a layer of fabric between your baby and the zipper and the elastic is covered and check snaps for rough edges that might be against the skin.

Layering is the best option

Babies always need one extra layer of clothing over what adults would wear, unless it’s very hot. Select clothes which will allow you to layer and you can add and remove clothes accordingly to make the baby comfortable. If you are staying at a place where it gets too cold then buying a fleece snowsuit will be best for the baby. Do not opt for any heavier or thicker snowsuit which might be uncomfortable for the baby and you shouldn’t be using anything thicker than a fleece on the baby in a car seat anyways.

Socks and shoes for the babies

Baby socks are a must to have especially when the baby arrives in a cold weather. The only way to find out the actual size of socks which fits the baby’s foot is through trial and error. You may have to have several pairs of socks handy for replacement as the socks tend to fall off the baby’s foot quite often. While newborns and pre-walkers do not require any shoes, but some parents prefer soft baby shoes just to keep the socks in place or for style purpose. If you are planning to buy shoes then make sure that the shoes are soft and have a wide top opening so that you don’t have to struggle to put the shoes on. Also keep this in mind that the baby will chew the shoes too.

Examine the hazards on baby clothes

The manufacturers are very careful about the baby clothes, but sometimes dangerous items slip through and make to the stores. Before finalizing any outfit check for the buttons if they are lose by any chance, look for the zipper pulls that could detach, and appliqués or embellishments that could be chewed or pulled off and any long strings that could catch on things. Remember that the federal safety rules and the standards for baby clothing prohibit full drawstrings that could get caught on things or strangle a baby.
