Baby Cribs | Tips to buy the right one
Products
When you are going out to choose a perfect crib for your baby it can be a daunting task. With so many cribs of different styles and features available it becomes really difficult to decide which one is the most important for you and what you actually need. Here are few tips which can help you in choosing a right baby crib.
Safety is the prime key
There are few standards made by the U.S federal law and whichever crib you choose will meet the basic federal requirements. So, even if you select a least expensive crib and assemble it to the manufacturer’s instructions and use it properly it will be safe for the baby. The mattress should be firm and tight fitting; there shouldn’t be any missing or broken hardware or slat and no cutouts in the head or foot boards. The width of the slats should be no more than 2 3/8” and the corner posts must not be higher than 1/16”.
Crib Side openings
Drop sides are one of the cool features of the crib and might be used most often. Crib comes with fixed, single drop and double drop sides. Fixed sides can be used by the parents who are tall enough to life the baby without any trouble and when the crib is occasionally being used. Most of the parents prefer at least one side of the crib to drop so that they can life the baby with ease. Double drop side is preferred when the nursery is big enough and the crib is not kept against the wall.
Ways to open the drop sides
- Knee Push – Lean your knee against the crib side and push, this will lower the side. This is the most common type of crib available today. The most easy and simple way to use a crib.
- Foot Bar - You balance on one foot and push a lever to drop the crib sides. This type is not so common today.
- Double Trigger - You may have to use both your hands to squeeze triggers that release the crib side. Operating the crib using both the hands is not easy while holding the baby.
- Fold-Down – it’s the most convenient and easy to use, you may simply have to fold down the sides to put the baby. but be sure that the folds are high enough so that the baby cannot try to climb out of the crib.
Cribs with Caster Wheels
Cribs on wheels are of great use. It’s an important and useful feature. Check the casters to make sure they aren’t flimsy, as you will be moving the crib many times to vacuum under it or to change the sheets or even to fetch toys which are fallen under the crib. Initially, if you not sure whether you want the caster wheels on the crib or not then you can leave them aside, but you might feel the need which the baby is 3 or 4 months old. If you have had a crib without the caster wheels and you do not want to get rid of this one to buy a new piece then you can buy caster wheels from any hardware store and install them for yourself.
Crib Mattress
Except for the most inexpensive crib adjustable mattress height is available on all the cribs. The adjustments will help you with deciding on the height of the mattress so that you can place the baby without actually waking him up and lower it for the babies who can pull up. At least two mattress heights is nice, three is even better. Find out the different ways in which the mattresses can be held up. Some cribs uses vinyl straps that could wear out and break, this is not so safe for the babies. A baby crib which comes with metal bars is a better choice and the best would be to choose a crib with metal spring support system to support the mattress.
Convertible Baby Cribs
Convertible baby cribs are attracting most of the parents these days, but the added expense might not be worth it for the buyers who are on the budget. There are some baby cribs which can be converted into a toddler bed and few others to a full size adult bed. Most of the cribs require an extra kit to become fully convertible. Check for the prices before you actually decide on the convertible baby cribs. Decide whether you really want to convert the crib or want to keep it so that you can reuse them for siblings and buy a separate toddler bed when the child grows up.
Where to Buy Baby Cribs
There are a wide range of crib brands available online. You can browse any baby products website and you will get baby cribs with different brands and models, but shipping might get expensive. Also if there’s any problem with the crib then returning might get difficult. There are many other baby mega stores which have a large collection of baby cribs in both price and style. They will have only few items in stock and might have to order others, which can take up to 12 weeks to come. Few other local baby shops also carry premium crib brands at premium prices. They too might not have cribs in stock, so every crib will be a special order. Be clear about the return policies before you decide on any crib.
There are other large retailers like Sears who has cribs ranging from middle to low prices. Other large discount stores too will have cribs in low prices and in stock as well. But their crib selection will be limited and usually low end models. Be aware of used cribs. Do not finalize a crib unless the crib has labels with manufacturer, model number and year, and comes with an instruction manual. Always call or check the manufacturer's website for recalls on used cribs.

I have heard they are considering doing away with the cribs that have the adjustable sides…in some ways I think that is really good idea. I am thinking about getting that kind for the next baby since we’ve already taken the side off my daughter’s crib and she is using it as a toddler bed.
