Arriving of a new baby is not only overwhelming for the mother but it’s an incredible feeling for the dads too. They get so excited about the newborn that they get the entire baby store home. But coming of a newborn is not a simple thing to manage, as it is not only an addition to the family members but there are also a lot of other nursery items like cribs, changing tables, diapers, clothes, and other baby supplies that adds up to your home furniture.
Among all these basic needs, there is an essential thing which is really important for the baby. It is the diaper bag, the mobile baby care kit. Whenever you carry your baby for shopping, outing or any other purpose, it is a must for you to have a mobile baby care kit along with you everywhere.
Let’s have a look at what all items go into the diaper bag
Diapers: As the name suggests, it’s evident that you must have diapers. but how many is the question that needs to be answered. Every baby is different but follow the thumb rule by keeping around 4 diapers in the bag all the time. You can keep few in the car just in case. But keeping 4 diapers in the bag is a reasonable number.
Wipes: You will need pre-moistened baby wipes to clean the baby after a messy diaper. It is also useful to clean up the baby’s dirty hands, or any other spots which might have fallen during the diaper changing process. These are also helpful for wiping the grocery cart handles which your baby might hold or lick.
Hand Sanitizer: A light and small bottle of hand sanitizer is appreciated if you have it in your diaper bag. It gives a refreshing feeling when applied after a diaper change and you won't be transmitting too many germs to everyone you meet.
Changing Pad: It’s good to carry a changing pad along, so that you can put the baby on any surface for a diaper change. You don’t have to look around for a counter or a changing table. Even if any dirt gets on the pad then you can simply wash it off once you get back home.
Plastic Bags: It’s good to carry few plastic bags, preferably with the sealed opening. If the baby leaks on the clothes, you can simply put them in the plastic bags and laundry it later. Also if you do not find a suitable place to dispose the used diaper, the sealed plastic bag can carry the dirty diaper without letting the odor out until you find a convenient place to dispose it off.
A Spare Outfit: It is always necessary to carry one change of clothes for baby. Babies tend to go through a lot of outfit changes. A onesie is the best and a light weight one piece dress which can fit very easily in the bag and you can dress up the baby within few minutes.
Bib: It’s an important piece to carry with you in the bag. If your baby is teething, takes a bottle or is on solid food a bib is a must to have. Using a bib will help you in not changing the clothes so often and keeping the baby more comfortable.
Burp Cloth: When talking about cleanliness and comfort a burp cloth also comes in handy and can fit in any corner of the diaper bag. It is required once when your baby is done with eating or when you holding your baby over the shoulder. As a part of a new baby’s digestive system most of them spit up. The burp cloth will help you in preventing any such accidents.
Digital Thermometer: If you feel that your baby is warmer than usual or starts acting ill, it is a good idea to keep a digital thermometer. The doctor will always ask about the baby’s temperature during the check up. You can carry a digital thermometer with a flexible tip to check the baby’s temperature rectally or under the armpit. The latest invention type of thermometer is a pacifier based digital thermometer which gives you an oral temperature reading. You can carry either one or any other digital thermometer to avoid panic in case of emergency.
Emergency Card: It is always advisable to carry an emergency card in the diaper bag with all the contact information, medical information and other details just in case of emergency. Even if you are leaving your baby with the caregiver it becomes even more important. Always have an emergency card available with you on the bulletin board at home, in the diaper bag and provide one copy to the caregiver to put it on her bulletin board.
Hats: Initially, we never thought that hats are so important to carry. But after receiving reviews that the baby’s do tend to get sunburns in spite of being protected under the sheet or the stroller cover, we thought of adding this also as a necessity. You can carry a warm hat for winters which covers the ears or a summer hat to keep the baby cool.
The list looks like pretty long to fit into a diaper bag, but trust me these are all small items which can fit in anywhere in the diaper bag. All these items and most of them are a must to have in the diaper bag irrespective of the place where you are taking the baby.
